This Page in Loving Memory of
Rex Orme
Coronado High School Faculty

September 19, 2004

Mr. Orme was by far my very favorite instructor at Coronado. He was A man who never judged me for my choices of who I hung out with, or what my reputation was perceived to be. He accepted me and never thought I was "just one of those stupid stoners". He actually fostered the intelligent side of myself that I rarely showed to the other instructors. To this day I still hold the fondest of memories and his life story is perpetuated through the stories I tell about him. I hope he enjoyed the bottle of scotch I brought him on the day of my graduating his class.

Mr. Orme....just knowing that I had you next hour totally took the pressure off. You never tried to bully us or scare us into doing whatever assignment you had planned for the day, just politely said, "Have you tried to do it yet Mr. Knight?"

There was a girl named Debbie Knight in the same class with Mr. Orme when I had him...we were not related, but as a joke Debbie and I would act as if we were...I never knew that Mr. Orme actually believed it until he asked me, "Where's your sister been?" I thought he was kidding so I just said, "She slept in this morning." I never heard another word about it. So Debbie and I kept up the charade all year....I can't remember who ditched more and who covered for who more but Mr. Orme took it all in stride. I will miss you Mr. Orme...you always, always cared about your students....and I'll always love you for that.

Mr. Orm was by far one of my favorite teachers.  Actually I had two, Mr. Parson's and Mr. Orm.  Some of my greatest memories come from his class.  I actually have several great pictures of he and some of my friends at his desk.  He loved the attention from the girls!  His huge smile will never be forgotten.  For several years after I graduated, I went back to campus just to see Mr. Orm.  His calm and cool nature made me love to be around him.  He was nice enough to let me store my roller skates in his room, so he was the first one I'd see in the morning and the last one I'd see in the afternoon...that is until someone stole the skates from his closet.  After that he actually picked me up while I was hitch hiking home one day!

Truth be known, I did not learn very much in his class about reading or literature.  I learned a lot of other things from Mr. Orm however...compassion, acceptance and friendship...things that will stay with me for life.  May you rest in peace Mr. Orm...I'll see you on the flip side!

Those words he used to write on the board..."Antidisestablishmentarianism" and that test which asked, "What if we had a war and nobody came?"  His story of being shot down over Germany in WWII and subsequently being taken prisoner.  His spirit shone like the sun.  Rex Orme was an exceptional human being, and the world is better off for his presence.  Rest in peace, my mentor.

Mr. Orme,

You always had a smile on your face when I would enter your classroom.  You helped those of us who did not have much of an interest in reading find a love for it.

Thank you!

I moved to CHS at the beginning of my sophomore year.  Mr. Orme was one of the first teachers I ever had who thought I had something worthwhile to say in class or in my writings.  He saw value in me and he helped me to see it too.  I am blessed for having had the chance to learn from him.

I remember Mr. Orme being so calm and quiet no matter what his students said or did.  And I remember the day I worked up the courage to tell him he reminded me of Colonel Sanders.  He fueled my love for literature.
